After declaring that she was successful in matchmaking between 'Ms.Taylor', her governess and a town widower, ' Mr.Weston', she takes it upon herself to find a match for her new friend 'Harriet Smith'. even though, Harriet is an orphan and of unknown parents, Emma is convinced that she deserves to marry a Gentleman. This gentleman she soon discovers to be Mr.Elton. Harriet soon receives a proposal of marriage from a farmer who she clearly has feelings for, however is persuaded by the new and more 'knowledgeable' friend Emma. under Emma's encouragement and persuation, Harriet soon becomes smitten with Mr.Elton, who ruins Emma's plan by making it clear that he has strong feelings for Emma and not Harriet. He becomes offended with Emma's insinuation that Harriet is his Equal and leaves to Bath where he marries a young girl almost immediately. Mr. Knightley, Emma's brother-in-law and closest of friends watches and discourages Emma's matchmaking with critical eyes. Frank Churchill, son of Mr.Weston, soon makes his appearance in the novel with the intention of visiting his newly wed father. Emma does not know much about Frank, only that he was raised by his uncle Mr.Churchill and his wife Mrs.Churchill after the tragic death of his mother. Mr.Knightley, is not a fan of Frank and is very suspicious of the young man especially after he rushes to London merely to get a hair cut. Emma, however, finds Frank quite delightful and exciting, but soon notices that his charms are directed mainly towards her. Even thought she plans to discourage and ignore the charms she finds herself flattered.
Jane Fairfax, a new addition to Highbury is described as Beautiful and accomplished but ,unlike Frank, Emma greets her with less enthusiasm as she thinks she is reserved and as the narrator indicates, she s jealous of Jane. Mr.Knightley defends Jane saying that she has no independent fortune, unlike Emma, and deserves compassion. His warmth towards Jane is detected by Mrs.Weston, previously introduced as Mrs.Taylor, due to romantic feelings that he has for her. this idea is soon resisted by Emma. The whole of Highbury soon assumes that frank and Emma are forming an attachment, although she imagines him as a perfect suitor for Harriet, after Harriet admits that he is in love with a man above her social station, which she straight away assumes is none other but Frank Churchill. Mr.Knightley soon becomes suspicious of a secret understanding between both Frank and Jane and tries to convince Emma, who scoffs and laughs at an idea. she soon looses his approval when she openly flirts with frank and insults Jane's aunt, ms bates. When Mr.Knightley makes her aware of his disapproval she is devastated and begins to weep.
SUDDEN NEWS! News comes to town informing people of frank's aunt, Mrs.Churchill's death. This unexpected death becomes a catalyst for unexpected revelation that slowly solves mysteries that Highbury is faced with. Frank's secret is revealed, he has been part of a secret engagement with none other than Jane Fairfax. His affection and attention spent on Emma was soon discovered to be merely to cover up his secret. With his aunties death and his uncles approval, he soon marries the women that he is truly in love with. Emma oblivious to Harriet's true feelings foreshadows shock, misery and heartbreak for her poor friend. Little does she know that her true feeling are not aimed towards frank but in fact towards Mr.Knightley. She soon discovers this and also realizes that Harriet has convinced herself that Mr.Knightley shares those exact feelings. Emma soon realizes that the reason she had declined Mrs.Weston's suggestion about Mr.Knightley as well as hating the mere thought of Harriet and Mr.Knightley is in fact because she is in fact in love with him herself. To her delight, he does not share Harriet's feelings like expected, and admits that he has been in love with her from the very beginning. Harriet is soon comforted by a second proposal from Mr.Martin which she gladly accepts.
The novel soon ends with the marriage of Harriet and Robert martin and Emma and Mr. Knightley finally resolving who loves whom after all.
